The story so far: Leonida, Vice City, Lucia and Jason explained
Who the protagonists are, where the game is set, and what Rockstar has said about the plot, using only official material.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar's Florida, whose tagline is "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America." The centrepiece is Vice City, the Miami analogue last seen in 2006's Vice City Stories, now expanded into a full state.
The premise
Rockstar's summary: an easy score goes wrong, and Jason and Lucia are pulled into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They must rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive. The two trailers lean into a Bonnie-and-Clyde framing without ever using the phrase.
Lucia Caminos
The first fully voiced female lead in a mainline GTA. She has just been released from Leonida Penitentiary, where she served time for, in Rockstar's words, fighting for her family. She is trying to build the good life her mother wanted, the one the family left Liberty City for.
Jason Duval
An Army veteran who grew up around grifters and crooks, used the military to escape a troubled adolescence, and ended up running drugs for smugglers in the Leonida Keys. Rockstar's line: "Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder." Meeting Lucia might be the best or worst thing to happen to him.
The supporting cast
Boobie Ike, a Vice City legend who turned street life into real estate, a strip club and the Only Raw Records label. Dre'Quan Priest, a former dealer turned music hustler who brokered Real Dimez's record deal. Real Dimez, the rap duo Bae-Luxe and Roxy. Raul Bautista, a professional bank robber. Cal Hampton and Brian Heder, a pair of conspiracy-minded Keys locals who listen to Coast Guard radio. Since Trailer 2 and the Extended Look, Rockstar has also named Lori Heder, Brian's wife who runs the boat yard with him; Stefanie Gates, the parole officer assigned to Lucia; and Andrés de León and Petra Navarro of the Megamundo corporation, who pull Jason and Lucia into the high end of Vice City.
The regions
Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga are the six areas Rockstar has named. See our map page for what each one looks like in the trailers.
